Eclipse Info

On Monday, August 21, 2017 all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun.  Northern California will experience 75%-80% of the eclipse between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m, with maximum coverage at 10:15 a.m.  While this is an exciting event, even momentary glimpses of the sun can be unsafe for our eyes. It is important students are aware that they should not look directly at the sun unless they are taking proper precautions. The only safe way to look directly at the partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. Families, we ask that you spend time talking to your student about how to safely view this event. Here at Sierra Vista, we will be doing the same. Classroom teachers are planning activities that are focused on this historical event. There are classrooms that will be doing supervised activities outside with pinhole viewers that students use without looking at the sun, but rather a projected image on the ground.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have specific questions.
